Where do you fish?
That's the most frequently asked question. I fish the Muskingum watershed
lakes in Northern Ohio, and some of the Ohio rivers. |

What
about rivers, like the Muskingum river in Ohio?
I don't fish rivers as often as
I do lakes. I think rivers are harder to fish, for a multitude of reasons. But
I've caught some nice flatheads from the Muskingum, and some smaller rivers in
Ohio. |

What
kind of bait do you use?
Second most frequently asked question... I like dynamite. At least a half
stick, or preferably a full stick to bring the big ones up
But seriously, I use live fish for bait. I
personally don't think it makes any difference what kind of bait fish it is, but it must be
alive. Any kind of baitfish will work if it's alive. If it dies, not
only will you most likely not catch a flathead with it, there is a good chance
it will attract channel cats if it dies, and channel cats are bad news when
you are fishing for flatheads... |

What
about technique (how do you do it?)
I think the most overlooked aspect of flathead fishing is structure.
Successful flathead fishing is much like fishing for any other "game fish", in
that you must find and concentrate on some kind of structure - any kind of
structure. There is a huge amount of information available about structure
fishing, and most of it applies to flathead fishing. Other than structure, the
most important thing is to get out there and do it, as often as possible, and
pay attention to even the smallest details. |
